Men’s Golf Wins Ninth State Title

Men's Golf Wins Ninth State Title

Our Mens Golf team has returned from the state tournament as champions for the ninth consecutive year.

The last time a PCHS Golf team didn’t win the state championship, the first iPhone had just been released, Instagram didn’t exist, George Bush was president, and Michael Jackson was alive.

This victory may not come as a surprise to the majority of the student body after the eight previous trophies, but the team didn’t get ahead of themselves.   Mr. Murphy, the head coach, explained, “I would never get over confident.  We don’t know how it’s going to be each year.  We’ve had a couple of years where we won by one stroke and five or six strokes.  This year might have been our widest margin of victory in the nine year run.”

One attribute of this year’s team was diversity.  The team had golfers from all four grades contribute to the win.  Coach Murphy added,  “We had a great mix.  Eli Kimche was fourth place and actually finished one stroke out of the win, as a freshmen.  Zane Schemmer kind of came into the tournament as our sixth man, and ended up tieing for first overall.  Cole Lee brought his game and finished eighth in the field.  Jack Hanskat shot one over the second day and played great.”

Sometimes a single player carries the team, but this year’s trophy was won by all around contribution.  Junior Jack Hanskat reiterated this point, saying, “This year was more team oriented than previous years.”

Park City finished with a stroke total of 569, 42 strokes ahead of runner-up Logan High School.  Zane Schemmer tied for first against the field with a stroke total of 140.

Following him was Eli Kimche in fourth place, Dean Tsandes in sixth, Cole Lee in eighth, Jack Wright and Josh Lansky in 11th, and Jack Hanskat in 21st overall.

When Park City enters the tournament in 2017, they will be playing for a double digit dynasty.  There is no official betting on high school golf, but if Las Vegas were to project an early favorite for next year’s golf trophy, Park City would be at the top of the list.
