What topics will this column cover?
My articles will dive into a variety of topics centered on becoming the best version of yourself and prioritizing self-care. I will cover everything from exercise, nutrition, and wellness tips to school success, mental health, and fashion. (I may even throw in some book recs and holiday specials).
Fingers crossed, I will come out with a new article every other week, and, If time allows, I might even aim for weekly updates. My articles will have three sections: Wellness (mental health, self-care, etc), Health (exercise + nutrition), and a random topic of the week. I am so excited to start this column and I hope you enjoy it!
Why am I writing this column???
It started last spring when I was finally cleared to weightlift. I had been fighting a deadly illness that restricted me from exercise. I was so excited when my doctor told me I could finally move my body again. I ran straight to the MARC to get a pass. The only problem: I didn’t know the first thing about weightlifting.
I remember entering the gym for the first time and being extremely intimidated. I walked in and instantly turned around back out the door. It sounds stupid now, but seeing all of the experienced and strong people at the gym made me nervous. I thought that they were going to judge me.
Eventually, I worked up the courage to go. I started by just doing random exercises, with absolutely no plan at all. After a few weeks with limited progress, I started to do some research. I learned how to develop a challenging yet enjoyable routine. I started to fall in love with movement.
I had been on the surf, ocean kayak, and outrigger canoe team in Hawai’i, but this was different. I felt like I was taking care of my body on my own time, not conditioning for an upcoming competition.
Then, I started running. Words cannot describe how much I love and hate running. It is the most fun, and most horrible sport at the same time. After joining the XC team, learning how to properly fuel became crucial to improving sports performance.
I used to be very restrictive with my diet. I just tried to eat as little as possible, dismissing what ingredients I was consuming. This summer, I got bored and started researching nutrition for running performance. I became invested. I learned everything there was to know about how certain foods impact your body and emotions. This research was a gateway into the health and wellness world. I fell in love with making home remedies, self-care, personal growth, etc.
With school coming up, I decided to do a Glow Up Challenge like some cringy middle schooler- but hey, it worked. I have developed healthy habits that have helped my productivity levels and self-esteem.
Self-care is often underrated. You might find love from others, but true self-love is essential. You are the only one who can truly make yourself shine. I’m here to help you navigate the journey of self-care, especially when it feels overwhelming.
Have a good week and I will see you next time,
L <3
