Ah, the Met Gala…
Held at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the gala is recognized as one of the most anticipated events in the fashion industry. Luckily for all you fashion enthusiasts, like myself, the wait for the theme is over. Announced on November 8th, Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion, sparked quite the excitement.
Contrary to the name, this theme is not a collab with the tired Disney princess. Sleeping Beauties refers to the rare, unseen fashions that have been held in the Met’s vault; beautiful works of art that have been waiting in slumber to be shown. It will dive into the intricacies of short-lived fashion and the cyclical life of art. The Met Gala will showcase these pieces with the newest sensory technology to make the fashion come to life.
I personally am excited to see the fashion being reborn, however, I do think it will be less enjoyable for all of us viewers who aren’t attending. We, in fact, will be lacking the experience of the smells, sounds, and feelings the fashion should be provoking. I also find it interesting that the exhibit will not only surround fashion as an art form but will also explore its connection with nature; incorporateing, land, sea, and sky, as depicted by Andrew Bolton, one of the museum’s curators.
However, I do wonder what Dior, Chanel, McQueen, and others will take on this year’s theme. Some pictures portrayed from the Met’s vault generate quite the excitement, and I truly wonder what our favorite celebrities will be strutting down the red carpet. This theme also defers from the controversial debates that 2023’s theme Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty spurred. Sleeping Beauties also prevents some of our biggest stars from repeating previous mistakes, *cough cough* Ms. Kim K and the Monroe dress.
