Every teacher works hard to learn and understand each individual student. So let’s return the favor and get to know one of Treasue’s most appreciated staff members: Mr. Cohn! Some may know him as their math teacher, but he also was the boy’s soccer coach and is currently the girl’s.
From a young age, Cohn always loved the sport. “I was kind of naturally good at soccer so it was fun” he states. Having great experiences with players and coaches made him want to pay it forward. To give others the same feeling that he had when playing. For young Cohn, the dream was to be a professional soccer player.
“To get paid to play soccer seemed pretty fun” he exclaimed. But as time went on he found his true passion. Teaching. Mr. Cohn wants to leave a positive impact on each student who enters and exits his doors. For him, the greatest aspect of being a teacher is seeing students down the road doing great things for their community, family, and friends.
When Cohn was a teenager an average weekend consisted of two things: soccer and Xbox. Not to forget listening to Eminem during car rides with his mom. “It’s pretty funny to hear your mom rapping an entire Eminem song.”
Now an average weekend for Mr. Cohn looks a little different. Depending on the season soccer is still in the picture. Working with others in small training sessions. And if the weather is right going on hikes and adventures with his wife, Mrs. Cohn!
If given the chance to travel back in time or into the future Mr.Cohn would choose the future. “ The future seems more unknown so I am more curious to see what’s going on. I want to see what going to happen with technology, AI, and cell phones, will there even be people in 1,000 years?” he says.
When asked if any book has left a significant impact on his life he told me about two. “The Big Picture” by Shawn Carol. “A profound interpretation of the Universe, scientific theories, and philosophies. He took really advanced concepts and explained them in a way that everyone could understand”. He also talked about the book “Why We Sleep” by Matthew Walker. Claiming that he wished his 10-year-old self could have read it. “It sounds dramatic but it was actually life-changing”.
Throughout his whole life, out of all the movies that he has seen, “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy is his favorite. To him it’s emotionally moving, to see the lesser people in the Realm have a large impact on the more powerful characters is “a pretty daunting situation” He claims.
Lastly, I ended my interview by asking Mr. Cohn about his biggest pet peeve. This is a message for the students. “Not coming to class with a pencil or paper, like it’s so easy to bring a fricking pencil. If you are reading this put 2 pencils in your backpack right now!”
Taking this time to hear about Mr. Cohn’s favorite activities, past memories, and overall advice was enlightening. There is so much to learn from the people around us, we just need to start asking questions.
