“Pop…Six…Squish…Uh-uh…Cicero…Lipschitz”. The famous words the Merry Murderesses in Cook County Jail sing in the song, “Cell Block Tango” from the musical, Chicago. Our very own high school is putting on this show from November 16th to the 18th of November. Many of the cast members are part of Thespian Society.
The Thespian Society is a nationally recognized society for aspiring actors and actresses in which they earn points for doing an activity they already love. Gaining points will help actors and actresses to get different things such as a letter, and getting on the Honors Role of different levels, i.e. State, National, and international. Thespian society is a wonderful new environment and community inside of the Theatre department where people can become friends and find people with similar interests. Cal Martin a fellow thespian says, “Thespian society creates a wonderful environment and the community is really nice”. If you love doing anything related to theatre whether it be acting on stage, doing lights with Stage Tech, or even making music in the Pit, then Thespian Society is for you. There are no extra requirements outside of what you do for the production and you get rewarded for doing something amazing.
Chicago is a play about murder, rivalry, jazz, and revenge. Staring Ella Olson as Roxie Hart, Nash Clevengar as Billy Flynn, and Lila Stein as Velma. Hunyak, a Hungarian woman, played by Emma Caarten actually learned the Hungarian lyrics for her role. If that’s not dedication, I don’t know what is. Everyone has had a bunch of fun preparing for this show from dropping sticks off the platform the Pit is on to making inside jokes about lines. With hilarious lines such as, “If I see that tomato’s name one more time…” and “Start the car, I know a whoopy spot where the Gin is cold, but the piano’s hot…”. The cast and crew’s favorite songs include Overture, Cell Block Tango, I Can’t Do It Alone, Mr. Cellophane, and My Own Bestfriend. This show has been wonderful putting together and is going to be an amazing production. Everyone involved with the show has put in a lot of time and effort into making this production amazing and they all say the same thing, “Come see Chicago!”.
