Have you ever wondered why people dress up for Halloween? What really started it all? The practice of Halloween costumes began in a Celtic festival that marked the beginning of winter. The purpose of dressing up was for people to protect themselves against demonic spirits, supernatural beings, or souls from the dead that were believed to be wandering the earth. 

Trends in Halloween costumes change yearly. Early on, costumes were usually homemade and consisted of children taking a bed sheet and cutting out holes for eyes to be a ghost. On the other hand, these costumes tended to be very morbid and were taken seriously. Nowadays, Halloween costumes are taken lightly and are usually based off pop-culture trends. 

In 2021, the most popular Halloween costume was a witch, followed by a dinosaur, then a rabbit. In 2022, popular costumes included Harley Quinn, characters from Stranger Things, and Lifeguards. This year, popular costume trends include Barbie, pirates, cops and robbers, mermaids, and Queen of Hearts.
