Girls Volleyball Succeeds in New Region

Park City Miners Girls Volleyball is off to a 3-3 start this fall, just having entered region play in 5A region 6, a new region for them. Varsity will take on Olympus High School at 7:00 pm at Olympus on Thursday the 16th.

So far this season Park City is 3-0 in region play but 0-3 in non-region play. The Miners have wins against region rivals Highland, Murray, and East, currently putting them in second place in the region.

Varsity defeated Highland on September 7th 3 sets to 0 for their first win of the season and a 1-0 region start. Two days later, Park City beat Murray 3 sets to 1 to advance to 2-0 in their region. This past Tuesday, Park City swept East 3-0.

Park City lost to Skyridge, Lone Peak, and Timpview, two 6A teams and the reigning 5A champion. Timpview defeated Mountain View in the 5A championship in early November of 2020.

In the fall of 2020, Park City competed in 5A region 8, made up of Salem Hills, Maple Mountain, Spanish Fork, Wasatch, Springville, Provo and Payson. In 2021, Park City will compete in a different 5A region, region 6.

The new region is equally competitive, as well as composed of schools that are considerably closer to the High School. In 2020, Skyline was the region 6 champion, finishing 11-1 in region games.

Junior Ruby Edwards is glad that the Miners moved regions and is excited to compete in the new region against good competition.

“The region’s pretty good, there are some great teams and great competition, like Skyline and Olympus, but I don’t think there are teams that we can’t beat. If we just give 100%, we got it,” said Edwards.

The Miners are coming off of an above average 2020 season, finishing 19-6 overall and entering the playoffs as a 6-seed. They finished 10-2 and second place in their old region. Park City beat Alta, Mountain Ridge, and Salem Hills before losing to 2-seeded Mountain View in the semifinals 3 sets to 1.

Mountain View finished 24-8 last season, eventually falling to 4-seed Timpview in the 5A Championship 3 sets to 2. Timpview defeated the Miners 3-0 on September 8th.

Looking ahead, the Miners will face Skyline, Brighton, and Murray once more at home, all region games. The Skyline game is on 9/21, the Brighton game on 9/23 and Murray on 10/5. All of these games will be played at 6:00 pm for Varsity in the first gym.

The Miners will take on Olympus, Highland, East, Skyline, Brighton and Salem Hills on the road. All of those games will be region games except for the game against Salem Hills which will wrap up the regular season on 10/26.

As of right now, Skyline is in sole possession of first place in 5A region 6, with a region record of 3-0 and an overall record of 17-1, most of which are tournament wins. Park City is in second place, with their 3-0 record in region. Both Olympus and Brighton are 1-1 in region, and Murray, East, and Highland are all winless in region.

Skyline and Park City will face off on 10/14 at Skyline, a very tough matchup for the Miners. Skyline is currently ranked fifth in the state, but the Miners won’t back down.

Ruby Edwards has this game circled as one that the Miners are looking forward to.

“I’m looking forward to playing Skyline, because they’re the number one team in the region and they’re really good as well as really good competition,” said Edwards.
