Golf’s Gold Standard

\As nearly every student at Park City High School knows, our boy’s golf team is a pride and joy of our school. We’ve won the past 11 State Championships and were ranked first in 4A as a team with eight of our players in the top 40 at State.

A few those players include Dean Tsandes in 2nd place under par by one stroke (143), Eli Kimche in 9th with 149, Griffin Ward tied for 10th place with 150, and Jack Wright tied for 15th place with a score of 152.

Park City won the State Tournament by a 12 point differential to second place.

“It feels pretty good,” said Jack Wright in an interview on the team’s success. “Obviously it comes maintaining that 11-year dynasty and there’s a lot of pressure with that.”

But the pressure isn’t something new according to Wright. “That’s why the team performs well under pressure”

The number of championships now won makes it seem almost too easy, and that it’s nature’s course for PCHS to win State.

The team finished the day with a score of 591. While the score is still very good and ultimately won, it was still the team’s worst score of the season.

The team had been close to that threshold before, with a 298 at Park City Golf Course the week before, and a 297 at Tooele on August 9, but it technically still was considered a slow start. It created more pressure and failed to create a larger margin for error for the reigning champions.

“Trying to be the best, number one, that motivates [us] more than anything,” said Wright. ”Striving to be the best and knowing you can always do better really motivates me. That’s what makes me go out and practice harder and do better.”

The same attitude is shared by every teammate and it shows. We see that passion and effort week after week of top performances. Especially with the dynasty continuing, it shows how these players’ passion for the sport.

And a lot of these players have further aspirations, looking to play more in college. “Consistently working hard at golf and it just being something I’m really passionate about and…having it as a career would be something I’d be really interested in, especially if I play well enough in college. If the opportunity presents itself then I’d definitely take it.” Wright stated.

When asked about the dynasty continuing, Wright had this to say: “I believe it will continue, I know that after this year we still have my brother (Ryan Wright), Wyatt Petersen, Eli Kimche, Parker Cutt, Tucker Lee; we still have a variety of players who are playing well and are going to continue to get better.”

He went on saying, “Coach Murphy is a great coach and he’s always looking to get the best out of the players. I think this championship dynasty will definitely continue. The future is very strong [for this team].”

As this year’s senior athletes graduate, they leave behind a strong addition to Park City High’s golf legacy. Four years of winning for these athletes, and many more to come for the upcoming classes.
